Is UVexplorer an extension of PRTG Network Monitor and accessed using the PRTG interface, or is it a separate install with a separate management interface?

UVexplorer is an additional product that can be installed directly on the PRTG server or separately. It integrates with PRTG via the API, so the results — topology maps, device groups, sensors — are visible right inside the PRTG interface.

How many interfaces can the UVexplorer server scale up to? We have more than 25,000. Would we just add more UVexplorer servers to scale?

You can scale the UVexplorer Server with multiple agents — similar to remote probes in PRTG. There is no hard limit on the number of agents. We generally recommend scoping a single agent to discover up to 10,000 network interfaces.

Do devices already loaded into PRTG automatically show up once UVexplorer is installed?

Not by default. It is a 3-step process:

  • Install UVexplorer and add a subnet for auto-discovery (or import the IP addresses from PRTG).
  • Run the UVexplorer discovery process — you can then add discovered devices to PRTG with a single click.
  • UVexplorer creates a new group in PRTG, or it can be merged with existing PRTG groups and SNMP sensors.

Based on auto-discovery, UVexplorer generates a topology map that you can add to PRTG with a single click.

Can you also export maps to Visio?

Yes, you can export maps to Visio.

Can you see which interface is used to connect devices to each other?

Yes. UVexplorer maps connectivity down to the port/interface level, so you can see exactly which interface on one device connects to which interface on another, including interface labels.

Would UVexplorer show port channels and their status?

Yes. UVexplorer detects Link Aggregation links and shows them as their own link type and status on the map.

We operate multiple PRTG Core Servers. Can UVexplorer provide a unified map view across all of them?

Yes. The consolidated map is best achieved in UVexplorer itself, whose distributed agents discover and map your entire environment into one unified topology view regardless of how many PRTG Core Servers you have. Please contact sales and ask about the capabilities of UVexplorer Server for consolidating multiple PRTG core data sources.

How does UVexplorer interact with existing sensors and devices in PRTG? Does it make a logical connection to existing entries rather than duplicating them?

Yes. Using the 'Export Data Only' mode, UVexplorer overlays its device details and maps onto your existing PRTG devices and groups rather than creating duplicates, connecting to what is already there.

Is the switch information collected by UVexplorer also available via the PRTG REST API?

The detailed switch information lives within UVexplorer and is not currently exposed through the PRTG REST API. UVexplorer Server does have its own full-featured REST API, and a REST API for the UVexplorer/PRTG integration is on the roadmap. If PRTG REST API access is important to you, please add it as a feature request at uservoice.paessler.com.

I thought a basic topology was already available in PRTG Network Monitor. What does UVexplorer add? Also, what security assurances are provided for credentials and configuration data stored in UVexplorer?

PRTG has a manual map feature, but not an automatic topology view — that is exactly what UVexplorer adds, with auto-generated Layer 2/3 topology and detailed port-level connectivity.

On security: UVexplorer manages credentials per network, the server runs over HTTPS with your own SSL/TLS certificate, and data is stored in an on-premise encrypted SQLite/MongoDB backend.
